The Design
The layout was designed around two distinct zones — a lounge and theatre area anchored by a large leather sectional, and a wet bar and entertainment counter that runs along the back wall.
The design language throughout is bold and intentional — black marble feature walls contrast against warm wood slat panels, creating a dramatic backdrop that feels more like a boutique hotel bar than a suburban basement.
Feature Wall & Wood Slat Panels The standout visual element is the combination of black marble-effect feature tiles and natural wood slat acoustic panels. The slat panels run floor to ceiling on multiple walls, adding warmth, texture and sound absorption — important in a basement theatre setting. LED strip lighting runs behind the media unit and along the base of the wet bar, adding depth and ambiance.
Custom Wet Bar The wet bar is the centrepiece of the space — a fully custom built unit featuring a waterfall edge quartz countertop in white and gold veining, undermount sink, dedicated beverage storage and bar seating for two. The black cabinetry below the counter ties into the feature wall behind, creating a cohesive design that feels deliberately designed rather than assembled from separate elements.
Home Theatre Area The theatre seating area features a full leather power recliner sectional arranged for optimal viewing. Recessed pot lighting on dimmers allows the space to transition from bright and functional to cinema-dark depending on use. The built-in media unit with floating shelving and hidden wire management keeps the wall clean and uncluttered.
Flooring & Lighting Large format luxury vinyl plank flooring runs throughout the entire space — warm grey toned with enough texture to feel substantial underfoot. The flooring choice was deliberate — durable, moisture resistant and appropriate for a below grade space while looking high-end. Recessed LED pot lights are distributed evenly across the ceiling with additional accent lighting in the bar and media wall zones.
The Result
The finished basement in Richmond Hill is a genuinely impressive space that adds both liveable square footage and real value to the property. The homeowners now have a dedicated entertainment room that rivals what you would expect to see in a custom built home — not a typical basement renovation.
From first consultation to final walkthrough the project was completed on schedule and on budget. All electrical and lighting work was completed by licensed trades and fully permitted through the Town of Richmond Hill.
